An ‘endothelium-derived relaxing factor’ is required for the ‘Corpus cavernosum’ (the swelling of the penis) to swell. For the endothelial factor to appear, sufficient nitric oxide must be present. Nitric oxide is formed from L-Arginine (with the help of free intercellular calcium) and ensures relaxation of the corpus cavernosum and, consequently, erection.
